Born Frederik Bester Howard Laubscher, 3 February 1927 at Tulbagh, Cape Province

Experiencing the landscape is a spiritual experience for Erik Laubscher. His paintings become the poetic language of his emotions – the experience of his reaction to the vastness and varying contrasts of the South African landscape. He unifies lines, forms, colours and textures into ordered compositions – capturing the emotional impact of the landscape.

For sixty years Laubscher has been a scout and explorer, searching for different perspectives that will speak to him in new ways. He has continuously refined his powers of observation in order to make new discoveries in his quest to capture the intrinsic characteristics of a scene – to reduce it to its poetic essence.

As an artist, Laubscher gets excited when contrasting forms loom on the horizon, and are momentarily juxtaposed by an unexpected light, cloud or mountain, to create arresting patterns in the landscape. Such discoveries offer the artist the opportunity to transform realism into abstraction; to create compositions that will capture the essence of the experience and go beyond the sentiment of the picturesque scene.

Erik Laubscher’s work speaks of integrity. The well defined imagery, the powerful mood and the indisputable craftsmanship reflect the truthful interpretation of his experience.
